We seek an enthusiastic, creative bioinformatician with a talent for solving complex genetics cases. You will be responsible for software development to unravel genetic mechanisms involved in genetic diseases.

Dit ga je doen

The Genetics department is in search of an enthusiastic, creative bioinformatician to strengthen their bioinformatics team.

We offer an innovative, multidisciplinary environment in which you will work as an independent professional on the development of a new standard in genetic care. We are seeking a talent who can develop bioinformatic workflows to help identify which genes and biological pathways are involved in monogenic disease, with a focus on nephrogenetics. You will work with large WGS and WES datasets utilizing data of thousands of samples.

Your work will be carried out in collaboration with the nephrogenetics team, as well as the section Genome diagnostics and the section Research. You will improve existing and develop new genetics analyses for genome diagnostics. You will contribute to shape the genetic care of the future!

Hier ga je werken

The Genetics department in the division LAB (Laboratories, Pharmacy and Biomedical Genetics) at UMC Utrecht has over 250 employees. The Genetics department conducts high-quality genetic diagnostics, care and research for hereditary and congenital diseases. We are patient-oriented, professional, and innovative and have a collegial atmosphere. As a team, we work together to advance clinical genetics care.

The Bioinformatics team develops, improves, and implements software and performs analyses for genetic diagnostics, and works under ISO-15189 accreditation. The in-house developed software focuses on processing, visualization, and analysis of large amounts of genetic data generated within the department. The Bioinformatics team is an essential component of the innovation platform of the Department of Genetics. This platform is fully focused on the genetic patient care of the future. Bioinformatic challenges range from the detection of genetic variants using different techniques (e.g. WGS, RNAseq, and long-read sequencing) to advanced data analysis and interpretation.

Dit neem je mee

You are a bioinformatician or computational biologist (PhD or MSc with relevant work experience). You have in-depth experience in the development of software for processing sequencing data. Knowledge of WGS/WES, long read sequencing, non-coding DNA, data analysis and statistics is preferred. You are proficient in Python, R, Bash and Git. Knowledge of Nextflow is a plus.

You are eager to learn, curious, creative, and innovative. You are a good collaborator with a pro-active and involved work attitude. You are able -and enjoy- to communicate technical bioinformatic developments clearly to colleagues with a background in medicine or molecular biology, preferably in both English and Dutch.
